Folic Acid
Folic acid is known to be a benefit toward help in getting pregnant, along with avoiding serious birth defects. Your doctor will probably highly suggest you start taking the vitamin should you become pregnant. You can find folic acid, or folate, in many foods, including orange juice, cereals and dark leafy vegetables. To ensure you get all the necessary amounts of folic acid, it’s important that you take a good multivitamin containing folic acid as it’s difficult to get enough just from food.
Prior to conception, folic acid contributes to your chances of getting pregnant by reducing the risk of some types of neural tube defects. To help with this, it is suggested that you take around 4 milligrams of folic acid to increase your chances of getting pregnant.
Although folic acid is a high contributor to help women get pregnant, it has an even greater effect in the birth of a healthy baby. One of the more common birth defects is spina bifida, which is spinal cord defect where the closure of the gaps in the spinal cord and column are incomplete. Another is anencephaly, an underdevelopment of the brain. Folic acid can help reduce the chances of both. These defects occur within the first month of pregnancy which is why it’s very important to start taking extra folic acid before you become pregnant, especially knowing you are planning it.
So, even though you may be experiencing difficulty in getting pregnant, it’s very important that you consider taking folic acid both for help in getting pregnant and help in avoiding any serious birth defects should you get pregnant.
