Most infertility disorders can be treated by medical help except aging. These treatments can be expensive and have adverse side effects which would need separate medical treatment. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) are among the better methods for treating infertility. In IVF, a hormonally controlled ovulation procedure, the egg cells are fertilized externally, in a fluid medium and then transferred to the womb. In ICSI, a single sperm is directly injected into the egg. These treatments are recommended when all other methods have failed. This process is different from the biological process of conception, in that the eggs are removed by an embryologist from the woman’s ovary, fertilizing them in a lab and then transferring it to the uterus. In the natural, biological process, the stronger sperm penetrates the egg. The healthier sperm and egg get selected naturally. In the artificial process the danger is that the embryologist may fail to select stronger and healthier sperm and egg and this may lead to genetic disorders in the child, even at a later stage.

Alternative techniques using a holistic approach, that cures secondary infertility, is fast gaining acceptance as they have little or no side effects.

Auricular, or simply known as ear acupuncture, is found to be very effective in treating cases of infertility in women due to ovarian malfunction. In this acupuncture method, the brain is found to transfer the hormonal signal more effectively to the ovary. This is borne out by women who have received this treatment for about 30 times in a 3-month period as against those women who underwent conventional hormonal therapy. The former had no side effects unlike the latter.

The alternative treatment emphasizes a lot on diet and lifestyle changes and hence proscribes products that contain caffeine. Coffee, cocoa, chocolate and green teas (with caffeine content) are not favored. Likewise, black tea and colored soft drinks that impair conception are off the list. It is said that one and a half cup of coffee can delay conception in a woman. Coffee is the bad boy for pregnancy.

PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) contaminated fish should not be included in the diet as this considerably lowers the chance to conceive. One study found that women who ate more than one meal that included PCB contaminated fish (got from Lake Ontario) became less fertile within a month.

Chinese medicines, acupuncture and certainly, the holistic treatment have provided the best results. The holistic method gets to the root of the cause first and only then prescribes the physical, spiritual and emotional treatment. Whereas the conventional method concentrates on investigating the organs to provide remedy for the problem and may not correctly identify and eliminate the cause. Besides, it also has side effects. The holistic method prescribes a natural remedy and a correct lifestyle to correct infertility after determining the real cause.
